Moirangthem Loiya, a name synonymous with ecological restoration and environmental stewardship, has become an icon of hope and perseverance in Manipur. The Journey to Punshilok

The journey of Moirangthem Loiya began in the early 2000s when he left his bustling urban life to reconnect with nature. Witnessing the rampant deforestation and environmental degradation in Manipur, he was inspired to take action. In 2002, he discovered a barren stretch of land in the Maru Langol hill range. Despite the daunting challenges, Loiya envisioned transforming this wasteland into a thriving forest and named it “Punshilok,” which means "Spring of Life" in the Meitei language.

Restoring the Forest

With unwavering determination, Moirangthem Loiya began the arduous process of reforestation. Over the years, he planted countless saplings, introducing native and diverse plant species to recreate a natural ecosystem. The once-barren land is now a flourishing forest with over 250 plant species, including 30 varieties of bamboo and 20 types of orchids.

Loiya’s efforts have also made Punshilok a haven for wildlife. The forest is home to barking deer, porcupines, marbled cats, and various bird species. This biodiversity hotspot exemplifies how dedication and sustainable practices can revive degraded ecosystems.

Community Involvement and WAHPS

Understanding that long-term conservation requires collective effort, Moirangthem Loiya established the Wildlife and Habitat Protection Society (WAHPS). This organization involves local communities in forest conservation and educates them about the importance of preserving natural habitats. WAHPS has been instrumental in safeguarding Punshilok and fostering a sense of shared responsibility for its future.

Challenges and Achievements

Restoring Punshilok was no easy feat. Loiya faced numerous challenges, including limited resources, resistance from local landowners, and the threat of illegal logging. However, his resilience and passion for the environment helped him overcome these obstacles. His work has been widely recognized, earning accolades from environmental organizations and inspiring similar conservation initiatives across the region.

A Model for Conservation

Punshilok is more than just a forest; it is a living example of ecological restoration and sustainable conservation. The success of this initiative has inspired countless individuals and communities to take action in preserving and restoring their natural environment. Loiya’s story highlights the impact one person can have in combating environmental degradation and promoting harmony between humans and nature.

Conclusion

Moirangthem Loiya’s dedication to reviving Punshilok serves as a beacon of hope in an era of environmental challenges. His work reminds us that with vision, perseverance, and collective effort, it is possible to heal our planet and leave a legacy of life and growth for future generations. Punshilok stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of an individual who dared to dream of a greener tomorrow.

The Lost Trust And The Path To A Descent Society

People don't trust the administration, political parties, or the judicial system. They have made it a necessity to create informal friend circles and secretive partners-in-crime to mutually protect and support each other in times of need. When the time comes, these people behave as either a flock of sheep or a pack of wolves, fighting with the other pack or flock, with no regard for law or ethics. The stronger pack or flock wins. Trust in constitutional babus, milords, and mantrijis is completely absent, and the public is not to be blamed. It's all because of how it all began in the past. The previous and present generations have inherited it with cascading effects. One flaw exploited by one individual will lead to more individuals exploiting the same flaw and other possible flaws that might exist. When the reaction backfires, they embrace temporary short-term immediate solutions, even if it could prove fatal in the long run. Such is the rowdy and corrupt behavior of the previous and present generations of Indian society.

It is rightly said that earning back lost trust is almost impossible. The same is true for the trust of the people. Nobody expects a node of the government to function sincerely, so they are always looking for 'backdoor' access to the services provided. People who trust the system are disappointed, and many of them gradually fall away from the line to start the search for backdoor access. This is exactly what is happening in our society now. One can't even trust the so-called higher class, socially and educationally situated people; the question of blaming the common people doesn't even arise. People are always suspecting 'bonafide' wrong interventions in any public service, especially those belonging to the government. The government is not the disease but the sick functionaries who are in disguise within, eating the society from inside. Even then, it's a childish assumption that the government will guide the people.

Instead, the government must simultaneously find ways to continuously remedy itself of these diseases or keep a check on their spread. Until that happens, society is not going to become decent anytime soon. For those who don't know, it is the well-connected and well-off people who sponsor such diseases. So next time, don't scold the uneducated and simple folks who don't follow rules; rather, set an example yourself so they may gradually come to follow it someday.

Tradition to dominate the women folks

Women leave their paternal homes when they get married, with exceptions in a matriarchal society. They leave behind siblings, relatives, neighbors, and friends, starting a new life in a different and strange place full of unfamiliar people, almost void of emotional links. She can't freely get to know people again as she did in childhood when no freedom was barred and innocence was unlimited. Now, as a grown-up, she is supposed to maintain grace, distance herself from men except her husband, and avoid wandering alone away from her house or locality, at least in the beginning of this 'new' life.

Let's say she discards almost everything she learned, earned, and stored since childhood until her marriage. The sacrifice is immense. In society, the family is a functional unit, and to be isolated from it is like a wolf isolated from its pack and left in the wild in a strange jungle. This renders her vulnerable and weak, suddenly non-capable of functioning as she used to and uncertain about her exact role in the new family.

This societal norm keeps women divided and ruled. Their weaknesses do not lie in their physicality but in the tradition of divided-and-ruled.

However, letting a stranger man come into your house and stay there forever, unguarded and unchecked, isn't viable. Society has seen more crimes committed by men than by women, and it doesn't trust men more than women. So, the tradition suggests that women must accompany their husbands to their homes, where they have to live with many family members, at least until they decide to be independent. They face immense pressures, difficulties, abuses, and more, not due to lack of strength but due to lack of information about the new family, the locality, the neighbors, and the cultural variations of the new place. Gaining acceptance in the new locality, new family, and among neighbors becomes her challenge. To say that it's a mighty task, frustrating, and time-consuming would be undeniably true. Starting afresh might be a good thing sometimes, but no one can say that it's easy and fun. And starting afresh by getting married is not easy and fun either.

While settling into married life, long time passes before she realizes she has children, and family troubles arise. There's minimal time for her to focus on her own body and mind development or on social issues affecting women. Importantly, trust between family members is not easily gained, as possibly none of them shared their childhoods with each other. Trust is rarely gained under mysterious and unpredictable circumstances. If not trust, at least childhood days paid the price to gain knowledge of the truths of so many people. She would have to pay a similar or different price to learn the new truths of the people around her. This condition keeps women isolated, divided, oppressed, backward, and ignorant. The solution is, well... Hope for a better future.
